Adjustable Back Upholstery  
Assembly,Installation and Operating Instructions  
The top two (2) straps would be left looser to allow the  
upper body to lean back over the upholstery to fight grav-  
ity. This configuration may enable the back canes to be  
loweredforaquad. Inanotherinstance, youmightloosen  
all of the straps and allow the end user to sink all the way  
back into the chair. Every person will be different. Let the  
therapist experiment with different positions and then  
decide. It is easy to change.

NOTE: Check all parts for shipping damage. In case of  
damage, DO NOT use. Contact Carrier/Invacare for fur-  
ther instructions.  
SAFETY SUMMARY  
The following recommendations are made for the  
safe and proper installation and use of the Oxygen  
Holder:  
THE BACK UPHOLSTERY COVER  
(FIGURE 1)  
GENERAL WARNINGS

The back upholstery cover is designed for three (3) rea-  
sons:  
The first is as a modesty cover to prevent one’s posterior  
from protruding out of the chair.  
The second is to keep the cushion from sliding out the  
back of the chair.  
The third is as a sacral support depending upon how far  
or tight the flap is pulled under the seat cushion.

Rem oving Non-Adjustable Tension Back  
Upholstery  
USER WARNINGS  
1. Cut cable tie that secures back upholstery to tab on  
axle mounting place.

fa ste ne d be fore a pplying the ba c k upholste ry

2. Remove lock nut and button head cap screws that  
secure cane handles to frame tube.  
3. Remove cane handles from frame tube.  
4. Remove phillips head screws that secure upholstery  
to cane handles.  
Your thera pist a nd physicia n should be consulted  
if you ha ve a ny que stions re ga rding individua l  
limita tions a nd ne e ds.  
5. Remove upholstery from cane tubes.  
Installing Adjustable Back Upholstery  
As the needs of the individua l become more com-  
plex, the eva lua tion becomes more importa nt.  
1. Slide one (1) cane handle into each section (anchor  
loop/adjuster strap) of the adjustable back upholstery  
with grommet hole facing the rear of the chair.

2. Secure adjustable back upholstery to cane handles  
with mounting screws.  
The adjustable back upholstery is a new feature. It is a  
positioning device with numerous applications.  
3. Set each cane in frame tube at desired height.  
4. Threadscrewfromtheoutsideoftheframetubethrough  
cane handle and securely tighten with locknut.  
THE ADJ USTABLE TENSION  
STRAPS.  
NOTE: Clean upholstery with warm water and mild de-  
tergent to remove superficial soil.  
The straps can be adjusted to various levels of tension to  
accommodate individual end users. In a typical scenario,  
the bottom two (2) straps can be adjusted tightly to sup-  
port and/or assist the extensor muscles.  
5. Slip adjuster straps through corresponding anchor  
loop and adjust back upholstery. Secure with hook  
and loop fasteners.

The effect of back support and the angle of the backrest  
areinterconnected. Changestooneoftenrequireschange  
to the other if optimal support and balance are to be  
achieved. Use of a wheelchair with adjustable tension  
upholstery can significantly increase function, postural  
control, balance and comfort.  
The height of the backrest and the amount of control pro-  
vided by the adjustable tension upholstery will vary de-  
pending on the abilities of the user. An active paraplegic  
(SCI)mayrequireaminimalbackheightwhichaddspos-  
terior stability to the pelvis and lets the trunk assume a  
natural balance over the top edge of the wheelchair up-  
holstery. A less active para (with a high level of injury) or a  
quadriplegic may require a higher backrest with an in-  
creased level of recline (FIGURE 7).

Invacare Corporation will issue a return authorization. The defective unit or parts must be returned for warranty  
inspection using the serial number, when applicable, as identification within thirty (30) days of return authoriza-  
tion date. DO NOT return products to our factory without our prior consent. C.O.D. shipments will be refused;  
please prepay shipping charges.  
LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS: THE WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY TO PROBLEMS ARISING FROM NORMAL  
WEAR OR FAILURE TO ADHERE TO THE ENCLOSED INSTRUCTIONS. IN ADDITION, THE FOREGOING WARRANTY  
SHALL NOT APPLY TO SERIAL NUMBERED PRODUCTS IF THE SERIAL NUMBER HAS BEEN REMOVED OR DEFACED;
